The mega concert that heralded the unveiling of his twin radio Stations in Umuahia, Abia State on Friday 27th June, 2025, and the kind never witnessed before bespeak of his strong desire to bring transformative governance in Abia State, which for long remained a backwater territory as a result of leadership letdown which reversed the matchless progressive era of Dr. M.I Okpara.
As an entrepreneur and philanthropist Mayor Lucky Igbokwe otherwise known as Don Lulu by his retinue of admirers has made a success of his private business life, carving a niche for himself in the media and entertainment industry. His 2Flame Media group has been renowned long before the launch of the Don 103.7 FM and Ikoro 93.3 FM in Umuahia, South East Nigeria.
Today he is being celebrated as a media legend, and has earned the applause of many leaders including Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, as a boost to grassroots employment and traditional expression.
However, beyond his business life accomplishment is an innate desire to serve and bring about a vital change in the system of governance in Abia State that transcends the routine road construction and salary payment activities that have become the trademark of many Nigerian leaders. He shares in the vision of the legendary Dr. M.I Okpara, whose Ohuhu blood flows in his veins.
This is why his recent political maneuvers have left political pundits guessing and sparking debate about what his next political plan might be, having created an enduring impression in 2023 when he contested the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primaries, and finished second position, an outcome that stunned observers.
Mayor Lucky Igbokwe came close to becoming the PDP Governorship candidate following the demise of Prof Uche Ikonne, but for the bastardization of the zoning arrangement by the party’s overlords, who were out on retaining the seat in Old Aba Division of Ukwa-Ngwa ethnic group, against the run of play. However, this particular decision turned out to be the party’s albatross, as the PDP in Abia State was decimated and seriously weakened as a fallout of the election.
Two political engagements that happened in quick succession first in 18th July, 2025, and another in 20th July, 2025 at Abuja succeeded in bringing Mayor Lucky Igbokwe to the spotlight ahead of the 2027 General Election. His meeting with the national chairman of the Labour Party Barr Julius Abure, and former Speaker Abia State House of Assembly Rt Hon Chinedum Orji, who is now a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, attracted so much interest in the Abia political ecosystem, as well as heightened 2027 fears of a potential Don Lulu run.
However, Mayor Igbokwe has denied rumours of planned defection from PDP following the two strategic meetings, affirming his membership and loyalty for the party. He also promised to make public any political objectives, adding that for now I’m still consulting. Political alignment and realignment of forces, behind the scenes consultations are normal incidents in politics as the country approaches another election cycle.
For Don Lulu the United Nation Mayor of Peace, and National Youth Ambassador of PDP during the 2023 Election, his influence in Abia politics has been particularly remarkable as he enjoys massive youths and grassroots support, largely due to his numerous empowerment and rural development programmes. This makes him a big asset to any political party that he decides to pitch tent with in Abia State as 2027 politics gradually heats up.
